OCR: Southwest Cap & Cork 2 Homebrew Supplies Catalog - 1994 Commonly Asked Homebrewing Questions Q. How long does it take to make a batch of beer? A. When kit brewing, it takes about an hour to make the batch of beer. I then has to set fur about a week before bottling. Bottling and cap- ping the beer takes a couple of hours (see altematives to bottling). Alter bottling, you should wait 2 - 3 weeks to allow the beer to mu- ture. As the beer ages, the flaver will improve. Q. What about wine? A. Wine making is a little more complicated and you will have to wait a little longer to enjoy the fruits of your Iahor, but it's just as much fun. You can either use your own fresh fruits, or simplify the process by using some of the many wine fruit concentrates listed in this culalog. Q. Why are there so many ingredients listed in your catalog und what are they used for'? Do I need them? A. Like any new interest, trying to understand everything at once can be quite confusing. For beginners, we recommend the BrewMeister Home Brewery (BM 100). This kit has everything you need and takes all of the confusion out of the process. To further understand the different levels of brewing and what all of the additional ingredients and equipment are for, read the book "Home Beer Making" (BB 165) of "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing" (BB 155). The WS 200 Wine Making Kit comes with a book that does u great juh of ex- plaining the wine processes and teaching you how to make different wines. Q. How can I simplify the bowling procesy? A. Rinse the bottles out immediately after use and invert them to let them drain. We also recommend you purchase the jet bottle washer (RBE 300) and, if needed, the fintcet adapter kit (RBE 301). Also try B. E. S.T. nu-rinse sterilant (CLN 200). These will do u great job and save a lot of time. Q. How easy is it to make good beer? A. When kit brewing, it is really quite simple and you have several options. Basically, you add the malt extract to 1/2 gallon of boiling water and cook for about a half hour. Add this to the fermenter along with the , corn sugar, and about 4-1/2 gallons of cold water, and stir. After thoroughly mixing, you allow the brew to cool to a temperature between 65 and 75º F. (floating thermometer included with the kit). Then you add the brewers yeast to begin the fermentation process. You can adjust the alcohol content by adding water or Todos. ing the sugar amount and check it with the brewing hydrometer (also included in the kit). The fermentation process for this type of hreaw- ing generally takes between 4 - 7 days depending on the type of beer you are making. Alter fermentation stops, you bottle it and let it sel for about three weeks (the longer it sets, the better it gets). Q. Should [ rehydrate the yeast? A. Though it is not necessary, the yeast does belter if you rehydrate it first. One good way is to wait until the water, beer, and extract that is in the fermenter is at the proper temperature (65 to 75 degrees F.), add the yeast to I cup of luke warm water und let it set for about ton minutes. Do not let the yeast set too long. Add yeast and water solution to the fermentor and stir with a steril utensil. Q. What should I do if the beer doesn't start to ferment after 36 hours? A. If there is no signs of fermentation (bubbles of foam on top of the beer in the fermenter) afler 36 hours, try adding another pocket of yeast (you should always keep an extra packet of yeast in the fridge for just such an emergency). If there is foxom present, or a seum line around the top of the fermenter, then the heer is fermenting. Q. What if there is foam, but the fermentation lock is not bubbling? A. The fermenter is not sealed. Press around the rim of the lid. If it still doesn't seal, it shouldn't hurt anything. To make sure your fermen- for is sealed, press lightly on the lid, this should make the fermentation lock bubble. Homebrewing is not just u cheap way to enjoy premium heer. It is also fun. To make it even more fun, get a friend to brew with. You can split the cost of the kit or each brew a different type of beer and share the results. Either way, you will be proud of the beer you make at home and you will find that your friends will be amazed at the quality. You can even start a humehrew cluh and have beer tasting parties and competitions. Just remember, Southwest Cap & Cork is here for you!
